Walmart Announcement, August 3, 2018

By Mark Ibbotson, Executive Vice President of Central Operations, Walmart U.S.

Over the past two years, we’ve piloted and implemented dozens of new technologies in stores across the country as we continue our quest to save precious time for our customers and associates. Today, we’re taking another big step on that journey by bringing cutting-edge automation tech into the backroom of a supercenter.

In collaboration with startup Alert Innovation, Walmart is set to launch a pilot using first-of-its-kind automation to help associates fill online grocery orders faster than ever before.

It’s called … Alphabot.

From the Alert Innovation Website

The most complex part of the Alphabot system is the Master Control System (MCS) software. To accelerate our development and reduce technical risk, Alert Innovation has licensed from Romaric Corporation the source code for the Romaric Automation Control Engine (RACE TM). RACE is a field-proven software system used primarily to control automated semiconductor factories, and by licensing the source code we have been able to adapt it to create the MCS for our Alphabot technology. MCS is responsible for processing all orders, scheduling all bot tasks, managing all bot moves to optimize flow and throughput while preventing collisions between bots, and interfacing to the world outside of the system.

About Romaric and RACE

Romaric is excited to see how Alphabot, using RACE software licensed from Romaric, is rolled out within Walmart (with over 11,000 stores worldwide), and other global retailers.
